Know Your Risk Before Symptoms Appear

After 40, feeling healthy doesn’t always mean that important health changes aren’t developing beneath the surface. High blood pressure, pre-diabetes, and type 2 diabetes can develop with few or no noticeable symptoms. That makes regular preventive care increasingly important as you move through your 40s, 50s, and beyond. Nathaniel D. Kwok, M.D. takes a proactive approach by looking beyond a single blood pressure reading or blood sugar result. He considers the broader picture—including family history, weight, lifestyle, nutrition, physical activity, medications, cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar trends, and other individual risk factors.

Why Screening Matters

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends annual hypertension screening for adults 40 and older. It also recommends screening certain adults ages 35–70 for pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes, particularly those who are overweight or obese. Finding changes early creates an opportunity to act before they progress. For some patients, improving nutrition, activity, weight, sleep, or other lifestyle factors may make a meaningful difference. Others may benefit from closer monitoring or medical treatment based on their individual risk.

Don’t Wait for a Diagnosis to Focus on Prevention

Dr. Kwok works with patients to understand where their health stands today and what can be done to protect it for the future.
If you’re over 40—or have a family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or stroke—a preventive conversation with your physician can be an important next step.

Take a Proactive Approach to Your Health.
